Leadership and morale/anti-morale artifacts are not useless. There have been battles with morale differing greatly from -3, even with +1. It all depends on the refugees; some useless units are removed specifically to improve morale.

It has happened more than once that the spellbook only contained a minefield spell (even with fire expertise). And the game wouldn't let me use it. The spell itself provides a lot of content. It's unclear what's wrong with a neutral terrain.
