I read the Walkthroughs of my fellow tournament participants and concluded that such a large lead in gold was achieved by a more productive first day. The lag on day 1 is a result of capturing more castles than I did. It was quite possible to defeat fewer computer opponents in less than 7 days, but the Grail just wasn't ready by that time.

I replayed it only once, and the first time I played until day 5 and realized that I was going in the wrong direction...
P.S. It's a pity that many strong players did not participate in this tournament.
I was well aware that the map could be completed in 4 days for 500 points (theoretically), so I didn't take cities just for the sake of taking them...
But taking Maracaibo with its capital on the first day is tempting...
It just turned out that I ran in the wrong direction on the first day. But again, I didn't really need a lot of money throughout the game, so I guess it wasn't about the capital. The Walkthrough scheme (the route, that is) itself turned out not to be the best.
