There are too many of them; maybe we can take out the forest spirit with fire, and the rest will fall apart?

There are two significant possibilities. Either the spirit won't care, and it will skip its turn and die, or it will get angry, and we definitely won't get out of here. After all, we broke into its home. In general, I'm strongly against this option, unless we're about to die anyway. For now, it's not doing anything harmful on its own. But I might be wrong in these assumptions.
