Where else would you put dendroids if not with the Elves? And they are essential in the game now; since the third part, these guys have been protecting the forests. Yes, in the third part, fairies belonged to a different faction, but firstly, that faction isn't in the fifth game, and secondly, fairies as forest spirits are more appropriate among the Elves than the Elementals.
