What does "only as a leader" mean?

Must be appointed as the squad leader, cannot be in a squad where another character is the leader.

And what does, for example, Gitgood's "leadership" provide? Let's say he is the squad leader. What "perks" does the squad get that would distinguish it from a squad with a different leader and without Gitgood?

Without this trait, he wouldn't be able to participate in battles at all.

Hmm... Well then he must have a spellcaster...
