What does "only as a leader" mean?

Must be appointed as the squad leader, cannot be in a squad where another character is the leader.

And what, for example, does Gitgood's "leadership" provide? Let's say he is the squad leader. What "perks" does the squad receive that would distinguish it from a squad with a different leader and without Gitgood?

Without this trait, he would not be able to participate in battles at all.
