The streets of the kingdom's capital greeted Ambrose and Lester with less bustle than usual; in these troubled times, many of the city's residents preferred not to leave the walls of their homes unless necessary, while those who flouted the impending danger demonstratively wore masks of normalcy, as if nothing had happened, but beneath them one could clearly discern anxiety. Nevertheless, it was these very people who kept the life of the dejected city going.

Finally stepping out into the fresh air, Lester inhales it through his nose and thoughtfully grunts. The city's smell is familiar, cool, in some ways dirty, in some ways majestic and golden, but there is a note of unease in it, uncharacteristic of its usual state. People outwardly act the same, as if unaware of the news, which is unsurprising given the situation of its artificial concealment, but some intuitive nervousness shows through in their movements: there, a shopkeeper dropped a couple of apples, and in trying to pick them up, knocked over the whole basket; here, two burly men bumped shoulders, and after glaring at each other, decided to part on good terms, each feeling they had been wound up; and over there — a mother cuffs her child for stepping a few feet away upon seeing a shiny toy in a shop window; he cries that she left dad, and people look at her disapprovingly.
- We should clearly split up — that way we'll cover more ground in the shortest time, - Lester nods to Ambrose; then he slaps the squire on the shoulder, who had been waiting outside all these two weeks of negotiations. - Missed me? Well, here I am! Show some manners, greet Lord Ambrose, my faithful friend, comrade, and brother. He can knock you so senseless you'll end up in the afterlife without even realizing it, and the poems he writes — you'll fly into the stratosphere! But anyway, that's not the point. A test for you, Alseus. What unusual, out-of-the-ordinary things did you notice while standing at the gates? - Vargas gestures around the scenery. - Surely you weren't counting ants; out of boredom you must have been noting everything that happens. Go on, spill it, - the Dawn's face, full of enthusiasm, grins right at the squire, then he explains. - And lay it all out for me, even if you think "well, that's some nonsense, not worth my lord's attention..." — no, dump everything. I'll analyze it, and we'll see from there.
