The start of the brawl brought Alaria two pieces of bad news at once. First, while drawing up the battle plan, some non-obvious rules slipped past her notice, causing her to make a number of unpleasant mistakes in her chosen formation. Second, at the very last moment, a new team of three northerners entered the contest, knowing in advance the location of all other participants and able to use that to their advantage. This surprise was also unpleasant because, had it not been for the promise given and the plan already made, Catharsis would have preferred to join their ranks, ideally repeating the feat of the rehearsal and further strengthening the reputation of Tezoth's defenders. Alas, she was now bound both by the promise she had made and by her own formation — ending up among embittered former allies would not be the best prospect, even setting aside any principles.
There was also not enough time to make adjustments to the battle plan — when the fight began, the allies acted according to the original and far-from-perfect plan. And even that they proved unable to carry out. If there was any silver lining to these unexpected events, it was that the fight was a training one with little impact on anything. Moreover, the sudden change of conditions and plans thrown into disarray by an element Catharsis could not have foreseen were a good opportunity to develop the ability to adapt on the fly. Because there is no plan that is immune to any contingency.
