Right now it seems like with a preemptive strike you would have won. That's most likely true. But if you look at the flow of the battle, Ples wasn't hitting you — he was hitting the pegasus. A preemptive strike wouldn't have worked there, since the attack wasn't directed at you. And by the time the pegasus died, Ples had spent all his heals, while you had a full set. I highly doubt you would have spent AP in that situation against an "armored" Ples. And by the end of the battle, a preemptive strike wouldn't have changed much anyway.
In short, RNG first had its fun mocking Ples, and then it mocked you too...
