I never liked unsystematic text-based games, though I did play them myself in my youth. Numbers make everything better.
In my opinion, numbers are needed so that players don't try to hog the spotlight, because in text-based roleplays it's easy to develop a god complex.
That happens in other systems too. Some high-level spellcaster in the third edition of D&D can, in the end, be no worse than a fighter in melee combat.
