Could you be more specific? I see no reason for "kicking the bucket." And otherwise, it's controlled by the player... With a "partner," it's a different matter...
Even if you don't feel like roleplaying the falling-out, the GM can always play out the friend's disappearance as a heroic self-sacrifice. Or, if the friend isn't around, a convenient fire.
