The most useful button in the new editor is the one that switches to HTML. When something like what you described happens, I immediately edit the tags themselves instead of fighting with the editor.

That's what I did, but it was naive. The preview doesn't match what you get after submitting, tables still get messed up, pictures are scaled in a way that's hard to understand, and all the text is combined into one line without special tags.
