I'm a bit confused. Have we all already moved on and started working at the factory at the beginning of the game, or are we still freeloading off the baron?

Well, if you just turned 18, then you're still freeloading. But if you're older, then you should be working at the factory. Of course, nothing prevents you from describing that you're still freeloading at 30; the baron won't kick you out...
