I have the same problem, the heroes' abilities don't work. I just checked Sandro and Solmyr (I didn't check others, but it seems to be the same for them) on the standard maps already included in the game. Sandro should gain 1 spell point per level, but this doesn't happen. Solmyr has the same issue.
Just add it to the installed mod.
