felt cringe from the English dub right away

It's funny how people can dislike English now...

It's probably the most bland of all the school romance stories I've seen.

It's one of the best shoujo I've seen. It has a warm and heartfelt atmosphere. Funny humor. Pleasant artwork. Charismatic main characters. There aren't really any love triangles (if you don't count the unrequited feelings of a secondary character), nor are there long, drawn-out misunderstandings spanning hundreds of episodes. The main characters are quite likable, not just a couple of bland characters with no distinguishing features. The male character isn't some abusive creep, as is often the case. There's a good focus on the development of the protagonists' relationship, which makes it feel quite smooth, natural, and realistic. I would say that this title as a whole has a slightly greater emphasis on realism than is usually the case for shoujo. The opening is misleading, though, and is more suitable for something like 3-gatsu no Lion than for a lighthearted slice-of-life rom-com.

It's probably the best advertisement for a manga I've ever seen. In the sense that it's better to go read the manga than to watch the second season.
