How important is it to perform this action? Will the map be playable without it, or is it not worth starting at all?

It doesn't affect the game at all; it just replaces the hero images. You can play with the standard ones, and it won't affect the game in any way. The map is great! Should I give you a small tip so you don't have to replay it later?))
