What, or rather, who did you choose?

I agree that everything is done well, but I think there is a connection (although not in terms of gameplay). Even though it is officially stated that the storyline of Heroes of Might and Magic V will continue in Tribes of the East, Messiah is a continuation of the story because the prophecy is present in Heroes of Might and Magic, and it is essentially the final chapter, although there may be a sequel. What epic are you talking about? It's just a regular one. In essence, the game determines the future of the world of Ashan: will it survive or be destroyed? But there is no atmosphere to support this. I think many players who bought Messiah just to play it (I didn't even realize at first that everything was happening in the world of Ashan, which was already in Heroes of Might and Magic V; there is no external similarity) and who haven't played Heroes of Might and Magic V and don't know the history of the events, wouldn't care what they choose at the end because there is no difference. If, for example, Tolkien hadn't finished The Lord of the Rings, and they decided to add an alternate ending where Frodo joins the side of evil and becomes the king of the Nazgûl, and in the end, the peaceful world perishes, I doubt the fans would like it.
