According to legend, the African king Cophuetua had no interest in women. One day, he saw a young, poorly dressed beggar woman from the palace window. Struck by love at first sight, Cophuetua decided that he would either marry this girl or commit suicide. Leaving the palace, he threw a handful of coins to the beggars, and when Penelophon stepped forward, he said that she must become his wife. She agreed and became queen. The legend was first published by Richard Johnson in 1612 in the ballad "The Song of the Beggar and the King."
