I tried something in the editor: a mage versus a druid. All spells are available, and the combat is enhanced – both have ranged and melee attacks, and are level 20. Both have 60 mana. And note that the mage went second. The druid summoned 4 mantises, and the mage summoned 4 phantoms, but one of the phantoms had 10 health. The mantis couldn't reach the mage, so both mantises ended up attacking each other. The mantises cost 12 mana, and the phantoms cost 8. The result depended only on morale, luck in the game, and real, actual luck. But still, the mage created more illusions than the druid summoned creatures. The result also depended on who went into melee combat first.
