They don't display in messages, but they do appear in the post editing section as a pair of characters. Sometimes, I was able to use the advanced post editing feature to place a smiley right next to these characters, click the message preview, then delete the characters, click the preview again, and then save the changes. After that, the new smiley would display correctly. However, simply deleting the characters and re-inserting the smiley in the post editing section didn't work – it still wouldn't display.
