If polls are always published in newspapers, with the nickname of the player being polled indicated, then the penalty for being targeted by the Mafia has a chance to give already polled players a 100% alibi. Of course, it may always be the case that the Mafia was already planning to kill the player being polled or, for some other reason, failed in their attempt, but even so, the role of the killed player may become clear from the GM's description.
