Overall, I liked the film. It's short, beautiful, and poetic; it clearly illustrates the moral conflict, courage, loyalty, sense of duty, trust, and love, and also shows in detail one of the distinctive characteristics of traditional Japanese consciousness and the ritual associated with it. I especially liked the scene after Takeyama slit his stomach – writhing in pain, he tried to finish himself off with a blade to the throat, but couldn't do it because the collar of his uniform was in the way; his wife, understanding his intentions, despite the paralysis caused by the scene unfolding before her eyes, barely forced herself to get up and helped him free his throat so that he could relieve himself of the suffering. It's a small detail, but very powerful.
