In the end, I got a terrible matchup against two plusses from my opponent. 4 heroes all week, dirty neutral morale, and only swordsmen were built in my town — expansion was out of the question.
The whole situation was saved by a simple, honest mini Griffin Conservatory, taken as early as week 2, where, by good old tradition, I got an angel instead of some miserable hydra.
Basically, this was the first critically important factor that allowed me to keep fighting. With the angel under Gunnar, I barely broke the ogres to get into the super-treasure zone, then the gr trees to get back out, 90 gr dogs for the mini Dragon Fly Hive, and so on, and so forth.
All the fights were on a razor's edge, but I managed to get out without super-critical losses; the artifacts, of which I got a decent amount, also did their job here.
On 124, a meeting occurs where the opponent buys peace. I'm glad there's no big army, but Labethka kept appearing in the tavern, and it wasn't hard to guess that Dima was ahead of me in building the Mage Guild: from his side, the 2nd town was taken as early as 113, and there was no doubt about his tempo with two plusses.
So, I see this as a gift of time, because I haven't really done anything yet, and I have little potential.
Gunnar was offered Fire a couple of times, and at level 8 I face a tough choice: take a random skill or run as a Logistician, skipping more movement, to learn Earth Magic in a hut that was quite far away. At the same time, a Conflux is found, but the thought of a university seems fantastic: I don't even have enough gold for this endeavor, let alone problems with basic resources — wood and stone are needed for every building and rebuilding of the Mage Guild. I also realize that the Logistician doesn't fit into the overall resource chain, and so I send the Lord for Earth Magic.
Somehow I finish the tower, constantly keeping in mind that the opponent perfectly understands from the external dwelling of dread knights where my heart is and might go on the offensive.
As a result, on 127 my army doesn't pose a particular threat to anyone: still the same angel, still the same 2 cavaliers with the mini Dragon Fly Hive, and 35 marksmen with 2 swords and pikemen as filler.
On 131, I have to trade, and here I accidentally misclick: while at the external market, I pressed the hotkey for the town market, and as if nothing had happened, I traded away a significant portion of valuable D; only when I had very few resources left did I notice I was trading wood for gold at 37 coins.
In short, with my last strength, I buy what I can, do an unsuccessful Mage Guild rebuild, and set off for another treasure zone.
After breaking the efreeti with genies and archmagi, I'm met by the Terrible Void — even the naga bank was a mini one.
Meanwhile, my tower is approached by the opponent's scout hero and a nasty artificial intelligence that decided to come out from below, through a bugged passage.
Here I think and don't understand how to go on, when I see a light at the end of the tunnel: a quest sword! And the hut itself is close to my main town. So, I set off to fight 84 horned ones. Barely managing, I squeeze out through 68 monks on the remnants of my army, and conclude that only meat that isn't trash can significantly help me.
And, oh miracle, I receive 5 red dragons as a reward.
I clear the computer, which, however, during my manual replay, decided to open the spell book (oh, if only someone would fix this already). But globally, 6 archers are, of course, nothing. So no unnecessary tilt. Just then, on the 3rd try, I get the desired Town Portal, and a wiser Gunnar takes the army from the Necropolis town to the Castle, visits the stables, and sits down to replenish mana.
Meanwhile, I still have 3 towns, and the time, I'll remind you, is 132.
The anxious wait for the turn didn't last long: on 133 the opponent flies in to take the Necropolis, where I just built an Imp.
An all-consuming silence falls, because if Blue had an army with an Imp, I would have no way to evict Labethka from the Necropolis.
Fortunately, there was no fat army there, and Dima went to sleep elsewhere.
Thankfully, at that moment I had already passed the second pair of boots to my support hero, and I manage to reclaim my tower.
I find a Griffin Conservatory near the third adjacent zone — I anticipate a good, reliable stack — and, following the established pattern, the game plays a prank on me with a single unit.
I spend the night in the Necropolis. Again, wild suspense.
And not in vain: the opponent flies in to quarter us with Labethka with double mana.
It's clear that I defended against the Imp by simply splitting all the dragons. But if Dima had had any summon at that moment, except perhaps Water Elemental (Labethka was missing only that element for a full avatar) — I would have easily been sunk. But even here, luck smiled on me: besides the Imp, there were only Chain Lightning and Meteor Shower. One more trade. Painful. But the opponent might have nothing besides 6 birds and 17 orcs.
I forgot to mention that on the night before the second Fireball, I got Dimension Door on my 2nd try, which over the next 2 turns allowed me to take some of the opponent's and the computer's towns.
Only one support hero, and just like Gunnar, without two Dimension Doors, but with boots.
However, that was enough.
On 136, the opponent certainly had an army for crushing, logs, and visited stables, but with two towns, that was not enough.
The situation was exacerbated primarily by the complete lack of support heroes and visible prospects.
And apparently, after a Pope's Griffin Conservatory of single units next to his own tower, the opponent decided not to drag it out.
Thanks for the game!
