I don't know how necessary it really is.

Massage seems useful. I can't say anything about healing spells, especially if your Knight, the character Neyra, and, after leveling up, my Enchanter will have healing abilities. Training pays off after 3000 experience points (if by this we mean transferring three skill points from one character to another). I'm not sure if it's worth it, but if you're going to use it, it's best to do it at the beginning.
