Regarding playing against an equal opponent, let me explain my idea: if you play against the computer (where the goal is simply to defeat it), then you can do so without diplomacy, but you might spend more time on the game. But the goal will still be achieved - victory over the opponent.

If you play against a human (not online), where the goal is to complete the map faster than the opponent, then diplomacy can help with this :) Both players will defeat the computer, and the winner among them will be the one who does it faster (this is the essence of offline tournaments). This is the difference.
