No, that battle is actually quite ugly. It's pure grinding. I don't like such battles, but without much experience, sometimes I don't see another way. Either use tricks (by eliminating archers) or just sit and wait for the abilities to trigger many times in a row. I wasted an entire evening on this battle.

I actually managed to win about 3 times (2 times with losses) and was close to winning several times, but either I would stumble or his morale would drop, and that's it.

At first, I played with the Spirit of Despair and just waited for the abilities to trigger. Once I won and even recorded the battle, but then I went to watch what was recorded and forgot to save. :D I had to replay. But then I upgraded morale, removed the Spirit of Despair, and with morale, things went much easier. Even if only two out of three abilities triggered in the first round, thanks to morale, there were still chances of winning.
