That's the whole point! The vegetable doesn't feel anything, and even though it might still want to die, that desire will be so dull and listless that it can simply be ignored, just like everything else in that state. Instead of "AAA!!! I WANT TO DIE!!! I'M GOING TO JUMP OUT THE WINDOW!!! I'M GOING TO START CUTTING MYSELF -- I DON'T CARE WHO!" it will be "Ugh, I feel bad, ugh, my knees hurt and I want to sleep. I'm so lazy, I don't want to live, and I don't even want to die, I'm tired."
