Cloth, homemade masks are complete garbage.

They do, however, fulfill the main purpose of masks during an epidemic – reducing the risk of spreading the disease. If a person sneezes or coughs, any piece of fabric (even if it's a scarf or some kind of t-shirt) around their face will help reduce the spread of the virus.
