I, on the contrary, never liked hiding behind headphones on the street, because you always need to assess the situation and be ready for an unexpected attack. And music didn't really distract me from all of this.

When I, for example, travel around the city by bus or just walk short distances, I also prefer to have my ears open, and when sitting, I just sit and read a book. But when it comes to a long journey, I prefer headphones when I'm alone. The exception is the evening, because in the evening, especially in the dark, it's better to be alert. That means having open ears + a pepper spray in your hand, hidden in your pocket.
