Anticipating Cezan's planned gesture, the girl abruptly steps back, ignoring him, to take Gabell's hands and express her sympathy:
— Mr. Gabell, I am so sorry," Maylin said sincerely. "When I came to you today and burdened you with my dress problems, I couldn't have imagined the horror you are experiencing right now! I hope everything will be alright and that Madam Zuphe will recover as soon as possible and forget the ordeal...

— Don't worry, work distracts you from bad thoughts. So you actually did me a favor. Besides, it's always nice to see happy and beautiful clients.
Maylin catches the predatory glances of Taffy and Maro.
— It doesn't look that good on you," said Taffy.
— Yes. And it makes you look fat," added Maro.
— Well, you're just mean," said Izemberta with a smile.
— Yes, we are, little snakes," replied Taffy and hissed like a snake, Maro joined in and hissed too. — Hiss hiss!

Taffy gently bites Izemberta on the ear, and she doesn't resist. Maylin imagines all of Cezan's fantasies about this in her head.
