Well, you explained it yourself - the narrative doesn't evoke much empathy, the characters are also presented in a very simplistic way, and the battles are very routine. I played it about a year or two ago, or maybe even longer, in any case, I played it very slowly, taking it in small doses, and finished it. I even got some enjoyment from both the content and the characters. And the ending even pleased me.
Added 4 minutes later I checked the save files - no, it was "only" a year.
