Champions die quickly if you miss a turn in battle :)
But if you accumulate enough, they really shine.

Then the most useful hero is the one who can take out a Chaos mage on the first turn. :)

And if we're being serious, the hero won't die from disintegration on the first try because he's not in the mage's line of sight (usually on the 2nd or 3rd row). And you need to act without revealing yourself...
