Why split up the main heroes?

Hello. I saw something unfamiliar in a streamer's Heroes 3 broadcast. He leveled up his main hero, transferred his entire army to a support hero, and then intentionally lost to neutral creatures. Afterward, he bought back the original hero and continued playing with him as if nothing had happened, and then he lost again and bought him back. Please explain why he did this!
