The screenshot shows the positions I held with two heroes. I don't know the exact algorithm, but sometimes Kirr, after passing the swamp town, runs a little upwards past the turn to the left, and then turns around and tries to catch up with us. It's also important not to set up guards in the swamp, otherwise Kirr will block the passage.
