the number of possible slots for creatures was increased for NCF.

This means they were digging around in index.bin, as that's where new slots for creatures are added. Otherwise, neither the map editor nor the game would recognize the new creatures (I wanted to create a mini-mod for myself that would restore the Black Knights, and it simply didn't work without the index.bin from NCF).
