I was thinking of placing them on the third tier and giving them stats similar to those of the armored swordsmen. For the upgraded version, I'd give them a large shield and the Crippling Strike ability; for the unupgraded version, the Betrayal ability, and for both, perhaps Fury or something similar.
By the way, when I created the Black Guardians before, someone took them and wrote a great, atmospheric description. It mentioned something about sand in the eyes. I'd like to find the author of that text so I can credit them when the mod is ready.
