Yes, it will be practically impossible without the HD mod and SoD_SP.
The key feature for me was the ability to create non-recruitable heroes - i.e., if a hero loses a battle, he cannot be re-hired. I also used a couple of other new features, although in general I am skeptical of such unconventional things.
