With Sheriff, it's simple: what he offers is corruption, and that's the cancer of any society.
Mary's surprise at Robin's actions shows that she is completely unable to understand the feelings of the person to whom she, according to her own words, feels a strong love. Ironically, there is no mutual understanding here.
Robin's loss of romantic feelings for Mary due to her actions can be explained by frustration due to the mismatch between his idealized image of Mary and what she actually is, but firstly, he is to blame for falling in love with an image rather than a person, and secondly, insults, especially without reason, are not very civilized.
As for John, if he is willing to fully invest his emotions, time, and energy in this context, he is either a fool or a nice guy who is desperately seeking female attention.

In other words, trying to figure out who is worse is not a worthwhile pursuit; in an ideal society, none of them would be needed.
