Moriner had hated and feared spiders since childhood, and usually even a single demonic creature in the house was enough to make him spend hours devising elaborate tools for remote destruction. Of course, he tried not to show it to the other students (and considering the teacher, it wouldn't have mattered anyway), and did everything possible – even learning levitation magic to stay above the board – to avoid falling into the cursed pit at all costs.
