He could easily have bought one somewhere in the city for a very small amount, so it wasn't entirely clear why he wanted to gather it himself. He chose a wide variety of flowers, sometimes pondering for a long time over different combinations, so that the overall picture would meet certain aesthetic requirements that he had in mind.
