You should save BEFORE you launch the excavator, not after... :)

I don't understand – what do you mean? I launch the game in windowed mode, load a save, launch the excavator – everything is according to the instructions. I make sure the windows don't overlap, enter all the data in the excavator, and start it – what save do I need to make "BEFORE" that?
