Okay, thanks! Overall, the game didn't seem too difficult after capturing the third Tower, and I managed to save almost everything in a single save file. Either I need to revert to an earlier save, or spend 20 minutes skipping days, and then it's done – I have an army strong enough to advance from a position of strength.
