Unfortunately, one of the downsides of the internet and social media is that they have made it easier to shift responsibility (even for something trivial) onto other groups and individuals. This public game of blame and shame has become popular, even fashionable. People tell everyone how they have been wronged, and this receives more attention and emotional response on social media than most other events. Those who live with a constant sense of their own victimhood find more and more support and participation.
Victimhood has become fashionable for both the right and the left, and among the rich and the poor. Perhaps for the first time in human history, every demographic group feels like a victim.

Writer and media commentator Ryan Holiday talks about "pornography of outrage": it is easier (and more profitable) for the media to write not about real stories and real problems, but about something moderately offensive – to spread it as widely as possible, provoke outrage, and cause "secondary outrage" in another part of the population.
