I'll add a gamer's perspective to the situation. When the Heroes community on this forum starts discussing balance, the best they can come up with (if I'm not mistaken) is the principle that there should be some kind of counter for everything, with some probability, but at least a chance of a counter.

Now, armed with at least this approach, let's return to our reality. I'm saying that there are grounds to suspect that the balance between Might and Magic has already shifted in favor of Might. And what makes me think this is the ambiguity of the answer to how to counter nuclear weapons in the hands of a power-hungry psychopath (or psychopaths). There's a vague suspicion that this is overpowered. The minor military conflicts that Heroin wrote about are a consequence of a more total imbalance that underlies all of this and has already tipped the global scales.
Or, there's the point of view that we, as thinking beings, are now under the threat of extinction, training for some unknown abilities of self-control and control over others. Which again only suggests that the balance has already shifted, and we must now restore it by training our minds.
