In general, in the original game, only the Goblin base has a justification for cowardice, as well as for betrayal:
Goblins are cowardly creatures, and they make poor soldiers. Even when they see their relatives dying before their eyes, goblins can easily switch to the enemy side without a second thought. And when faced with the slightest threat to their own safety, they run away as fast as they can.
As for the trappers:
They consider themselves great warriors. Before going into battle, they smear themselves with mud and wear a necklace made of teeth pulled from the mouths of all the enemies they have defeated.
And the Sorcerers are generally a respected people:
Goblin Sorcerers are highly respected in their tribe.
The upgrade descriptions simply don't match their actual position as cowardly fodder for shamans and cyclops. So, in my opinion, cowardice is completely unnecessary for any goblin, except for those in the base.
