Basically, here's the trick:
1) Wait for the character in the future to perform a certain action or see a certain thing.
2) Do everything possible to make this event impossible (kill that woman, for example).
3) A paradox occurs.
4) There is no such thing as fate.

But she is a bandit, and now a dozen archers will jump out of the bushes.
Revan:

We will defeat them in the past and create a temporal paradox, as a result of which the universe will collapse.
