The problem isn't with your hardware, but with Windows 10
Since I wrote my post, I did some more searching, then got frustrated and brought out a laptop that I bought as a gift for my mother back in 2011. It has a gtx 540M and an i5 processor, running Windows 10 version 1607. I installed Heroes 5, and it runs perfectly. So, either the game isn't recognizing my graphics card (GPU load in the game fluctuates from 6% to 10%), or the engine simply doesn't support it and is trying to render everything on the processor, because the CPU load is constantly at 95% on one core.
