You're all discussing the "sovok" mentality, but I communicate with foreigners. And there, compared to our modest "please," there's a lot of humiliation and groveling. For example,
"could you please",
"would you like"
and other things. In fact, almost every sentence in business correspondence has some "sovok" element. That's how it is.
There, you can't even say "no"; you have to say "yes, but...".
