Didn't they change their behavior pattern after 500 rounds or so?

I also had to fight battles with 1k+ turns, and there were at least a dozen of them - no change in the AI's behavior was noticed after 500 rounds. But was it supposed to change?
Besides, if the behavior had changed, some of the battles would have been unwinnable.
