Maybe it would be helpful to simply include the procedure for appointing a Designated Defender in the rules? That way, neither the organizers nor the players would have any questions.

That's a good question, but I don't think it's straightforward and requires a separate discussion. Personally, I don't see a universal solution at the moment.

P.S. And what does ODD stand for? "Really want a Defender from the first building"?:D :D
